During WWII, the US government developed concentration camps in several western states in which they imprisoned thousands of Americans of Japanese descent. Photographer, Dorothea Lange (famous for her work on depression-era rural whites and migrant families) made a series of extraordinary images, which were impounded by military censors and unavailable to the public for viewing until recent years. Given the fascist impulses of the current political moment in our nation, it’s more important than ever to remember this history and insist that this is NOT the road we will travel as Americans.
