  • Lawson describes his mother as having a great deal of strength. What is his definition of strength? Where does this come from?
  • After telling his mother about how he responded to the white child who called him a "nigger," she chooses a particular way of responding to him. What were the key elements of that response? What impact did it have on Lawson?
  • Situations like the one Lawson faced in his story are unfortunately all too common, and they often set in motion of cycle of violence and retaliation. How does Lawson’s mother’s response offer the hope of a more healing approach? How might it apply in other settings?
