“Beyond Vietnam” – 50th Anniversary

The Veterans of Hope Project joins the Iliff School of Theology and Riverside Church in New York City for a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Beyond Vietnam” sermon.  On April 4, 1967, Dr. King delivered a powerful address at Riverside Church in New York City speaking courageously and eloquently against the US war in Vietnam. This sermon, written by historian Vincent Harding, was King’s first major statement against the war. King described the United States government as the “greatest purveyor of violence in the world.” He called for a “revolution of values” in our country, saying that we are challenged to create humane alternatives to the triple evils of racism, militarism and materialism in US society.

We have invited longtime grassroots activist and public theologian Ruby Sales to be in conversation with legal scholar Michelle Alexander (author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness) on April 4 of this year at 7pm. Please join us for this extraordinary dialogue about the meaning of King’s 1967 address and the urgency with which we must strengthen democracy and embrace an ethics of justice and compassion in our nation.
