Mr. Charles Sherrod, Jr., (b.1937), a native of Petersburg, Virginia, was a pioneering member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee who helped to set the audacious mold for SNCC’s powerful contributions to the southern freedom movement. In the years since the freedom movement, Sherrod has continued his organizing work – developing farming cooperatives, serving as an elected official and, most recently, working as a chaplain in local prisons in southwest Georgia.
