Dr. Staughton (b. 1929) and Ms. Alice Lynd (b. 1930) are a couple who have worked together for nonviolent social change for more than six decades. Staughton, an American historian, was on the faculty at Spelman College in the 1960s and the couple was invited by SNCC to help create the Freedom School curriculum for the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer project. The Lynds are Quakers and activist lawyers and have been involved in a variety of grassroots peace and justice movements, including public defense of death row inmates.
