Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth (1922-2011) was a leader of the history-making Birmingham (Alabama) mass movement. At Shuttlesworth’s invitation, Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference came to Birmingham in 1963 and joined the breakthrough, desegregation efforts in that city. King called him, “the most fearless Negro leader in America.”
